why baptism?
For a new believer, baptism is one of the most exciting and meaningful milestones on the spiritual journey. Think of it as the ultimate "coming out party" for your faith.
While baptism doesn't "save" you (only your faith in Jesus does), it is incredibly important for three main reasons:
1. It is a Public Announcement
Imagine getting engaged but keeping the ring in your pocket and never telling a soul. That would be strange, right? Baptism is like a wedding. When two people get married, they are stating publicly what they have already declared privately. It is an outward, visible sign of an inward, invisible commitment. After someone makes a decision to follow Jesus, the very next step should be baptism. Just before Jesus left the earth, He said this… “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28: 19 & 20)
By getting baptized in front of others, you are cheerfully announcing to the world: "I am with Jesus now. This is my new identity."
2. It is a Vivid Picture of New Life
The act of being lowered under the water and brought back up is a beautiful, physical reenactment of what Jesus did—and what has happened inside you spiritually.
You never physically look more like Jesus than the day you are baptized. As you stand in the water you are dying to yourself as the master of your life.
What do you do with a dead person? You bury them. When Jesus died on the cross, they took his body off the cross and placed Him in the tomb. The waters of baptism have often been called “the watery grave.” As you go under the water, you are symbolically being buried with Jesus, and then just as Jesus rose from the grave, you come up out of the water, raised to walk in the newness of your life in Jesus.
3. It Follows Jesus' Example and Command
As a new believer, your main goal is to follow Jesus and try to be like Him.
Jesus was baptized: Even though He didn't have sins to wash away, Jesus Himself was baptized at the start of His ministry to set an example for us.
As we said earlier, Jesus explicitly told His followers to go out, share the good news, and baptize those who believe. Getting baptized is simply your first major step of obedience to your new Leader.
A Quick Reminder: You don’t need to wait until you are a "perfect" Christian or have the whole Bible memorized to get baptized. In the early church, people were baptized the very same day they decided to trust Jesus! It’s not a graduation ceremony for mature Christians; it’s a starting line for new ones.
